The Birdwell Kitchen Project

project spotlight

This outdated and overcrowded kitchen needed a remodel to bring the room from the 1960s into the new millennium. The existing walls and flooring were to remain intact, but counter space needed to be added throughout and all of the lighting and appliances had to be replaced. In addition, the kitchen windows were deteriorating and storage space was badly needed.

Our client actually began her own remodel when she tore out what she called the “horrible hood from the 60s” from above her stove. She then called us to come up with a design that eliminated clutter, reduced storage frustrations and gave her more cooking space, all with a look that created an old country Tuscan feel.

First, we installed cabinetry with adjustable shelving that added storage and helped clear clutter from the countertop. We chose a range instead of separate oven and cook top units to add over six feet of counter space. With the counter space problem solved, we tackled the overall look of the room. We installed a new micro hood to replace the old 60s style hood, put in a new counter-depth refrigerator that created cleaner lines and replaced the window over the sink with a larger insulated window, which opened up enough space to install display cabinetry for the client’s “pretty things.” We also replaced the bay window in the breakfast area with French doors that allowed the client access to her garden.

We used creative lighting techniques to achieve the Tuscan atmosphere the client desired. Recessed lighting added brightness to the room, while under-cabinet task lighting and in-cabinet showcase lighting highlighted the kitchen’s features. Other details, including the tumbled stone backsplash, mental vineyard mural, soft beige granite, rustic patina hardware and farmhouse sink, combined to give a distinctly country Tuscan feel to the new kitchen.

When asked what our client liked best about her new kitchen, she simply said, “Oh my gosh! I can’t just pick one thing.” Faced with the challenge to take 40 years off of our client’s kitchen, address space issues and create a Tuscan flavor, we came up with creative and innovative solutions that exceeded our client’s expectations.
